GIIS super achievers take centre stage at Global School Awards

On September 15, GIIS celebrated commitment, perseverance and success achieved by students, teachers and members of staff at the Global School Awards 2012. The ceremony, attended by guests and award recipients from all three GIIS campuses in Singapore, was a recognition of the extraordinary accomplishments attained by students in the fields of academics, sports and co-curricular activities. For teachers and staff members, it was an acknowledgement of the exceptional abilities demonstrated by them in teaching and administrative fields.

Present at the event were Guest of Honour, Chairman and Co-founder, Global Schools Foundation, Mr Atul Temurnikar, Country Director (Singapore), GIIS, Mr Rajiv Vasudeva, GIIS Principals, Vice-Principals, students, parents, dignitaries, teachers and administrative staff members.

The Global School Awards have been instituted to recognise the undying commitment and performance excellence of GIIS students, teachers and staff. The prestigious event is a celebration of the GIIS spirit to persevere and triumph. The award ceremony motivates all at GIIS to excel in what they envision as their boundaries and set new targets for themselves. This year, 297 recipients received awards at the glittering ceremony who were honoured for their exceptional achievements.

Addressing the awardees, parents and teachers as well as members of the staff, Mr Temurnikar said, “Today, we have gathered here to recognise the best and the brightest of our students and teachers. Academic awards-especially institutional or national awards-are a great way to show colleges that you can succeed in any setting.” He concluded his address with a message to students, “Whatever you do, love what you do and enjoy doing it. Do it in the best way possible and be the best in what you do.”

At the root of the greatest teaching qualities lie the most inspiring efforts with intelligent guidance, sincere approach and skillful execution. GIIS teachers have excelled in their teaching craftsmanship with a meaningful impact on students, the fruits of which are evident across all levels.

GIIS teachers and staff members were felicitated with awards in four categories:
  1. The GIIS Long Service Award
  2. Dr L M Singhvi GIIS Ambassador Award
  3. The Mahatma Gandhi GIIS Extra Mile Award
  4. The GIIS Star Award

The Global School Awards for students were a crowning glory for those who have made their dreams comes true. Honoured for their ability to excel in various fields including academics, co-curricular, sports and all round excellence, GIIS students who walked up on stage were a special group of individuals.

American educator Charles Kendall Adams once said, “It is a favourite belief of mine that no student ever attains very eminent success by simply doing what is required of him; it is the amount and excellence of what is over and above the required that determines the greatness of ultimate distinction.”

GIIS student achievers were awarded prizes in three main categories -

  • Dr APJ Abdul Kalam GIIS award for Academic Proficiency
  • GSF President s award for All Round Excellence (named after GSF President, Prof. MGK Menon )
  • GIIS Subject Proficiency Award
Additional Awards given to students included the Mr Chandu Borde GIIS Award for Sports Excellence and the Justice C S Dharmadhikari GIIS award for Co Curricular Excellence. The awardees received trophies and plaques from Mr Atul Temurnikar, who was accompanied on the stage by Mr Rajiv Vasudeva.

Performances from students of all three campuses brought an element of cultural grace and charm to the award ceremony. The event began with Bhangra Pulse, a spirited dance by students of GIIS Balestier Campus, which got the audience clapping with the music beats. GIIS East Coast Rock Band struck a chord with the audience with their all-student band putting up a confident performance.

The last was Fusion Dreams, a perfectly choreographed Bharathanatyam dance based on fusion music performed by GIIS Queenstown Campus team.
